In a futuristic Blade Runner-esque dystopia inspired by the comic, magic has been discovered as a new form of technology and becomes commercialised and sold to the highest bidder. Our Team HEX11 is on the run from a sinister corporation known as the Omega Corp and it is up to the tomboys to save their fellow witches. Only problem: Joanna, Persis, Raven, and Siti are just lowly apprentices who spend more time hauling buckets of water up and down the hill for their Sinseh than learning any actual magic.

IN THIS EPISODE, WE TALK ABOUT:
1. MEETING THE TEAM BEHIND HEX11 [07’00”]
We speak to the creators of HEX11 who are running HexComix – a Los Angeles-based comic book label, devoted to showcasing non-traditional voices and telling unique stories as well as nominees of the Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity.
Think Harry Potter meets Blade Runner and you have HEX11. The comic tells the epic story of one young witch living in a futuristic dystopia where magic has been discovered as a new technology. When Elanor stumbles on a firefight between a demon mercenary and a black market magic dealer, she finds herself in the centre of a sinister corporate conspiracy.
With the Team HEX11 in the hot seat, we grill them about
- HEX11 plot and characters
- What to expect for Volume 2
- Why they chose to start an independent comic label for HEX11 instead of reaching out to the bigger established names
- Sexism in mainstream comics
- The rise of niche content
- What it is like to launch a new title at the San Diego Comic Con for the first time
- Upcoming titles for HexComix
2. NEWS HIGHLIGHTS [19’33”]
With the San Diego Comic Con just around the corner, we round up our SDCC themed news highlights. Director James Gunn has recently taken to Facebook to share a video of himself and his bro aka Internet’s Boyfriend aka Chris Pratt announcing that filming has wrapped for Guardians of the Galaxy 2. If that is not awesome enough, he is bringing the movie – and some of his cast including Pratt to San Diego Comic Con.
This year, Wonder Woman celebrates her 75th anniversary and it will be exciting to see how the milestone is recognised at the San Diego Comic Con. In fact, DC will host a panel about the character in honour of her 75th so that’s another one to look out for. Will we get to see a preview of the highly anticipated Wonder Woman movie?
It’s also a bad time to be a TV fan with female characters getting a raw deal this year. Queer female characters being killed off at an alarming rate so it’s great to hear how showrunner Emily Andras promised the fans that our favourite new couple Waverly and Officer Haught will return to our screens if Wynonna Earp is renewed for another season (SyFy, what are you waiting for?). Wynonna Earp has a shaky start but it soon grew to become one of our new favourite shows and that’s a third SDCC panel that we look forward to!
3. TEAM HEX11 RAPIDFIRE [28’31”]
The multi-tasking Team HEX11 runs a coven on top of a comic book label and has developed a demon trapper prototype that is highly coveted by the Omega Corp. As we look for the missing demon trapper back in Emerald Alley, it’s time for a comic con themed rapid fire. How will Team HEX11 fare? Is Kelly Sue DeConnick and Kelly Sue Milano the same person?
